About Hemorrhoids

Did you Know?
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins. Reducing that swelling is the key to relief. Cryostat cold therapy targets swelling for instant relief.

Hemorrhoids are painful, swollen veins in the lower portion of the rectum or anus. The veins themselves are present in every person, but they only become a problem when they expand and do not contract naturally. These dilated veins are hemorrhoids (also known as piles) that cause discomfort ranging from minor itching to excruciating pain.

While they can be painful, this common condition is generally not serious. There are two types of hemorrhoids, internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids occur just inside the anus, at the beginning of the rectum. External hemorrhoids occur at the anal opening and may hang outside the anus. Both types of hemorrhoids are commonly caused by excess pressure on the area.

Causes
Too much pressure on the veins in the pelvic and rectal area causes hemorrhoids, which most commonly occurs as a result of straining during bowel movements. Hemorrhoids can also occur from constipation and diarrhea. Pregnancy and childbirth put extreme pressure on this region and can contribute to hemorrhoids, as does being overweight or sitting for long periods of time.

Symptoms of hemorrhoids
  • Itching
  • Pain, especially while sitting
  • Bright red blood on toilet tissue, stool, or in the toilet bowl
  • Painful bowel movements
Avoiding Hemorrhoids
You can avoid hemorrhoids by following these healthy living tips:
  1. Increase the fiber in your diet.
  2. Drink plenty of water.
  3. Make exercise a part of your daily life (at least 30 minutes per day).
  4. Eat regular meals.
  5. Avoid straining with bowel movements.
